Multple sites on one database

I want to upgrade my current site to a specialized dolphin social network site where multiple sites share the same database, possibly using sub-domains, can be administered from one admin access, with each site having its own template,own members and full functions of a dolphin site. Admin to have the option to add extra sites

When a user registers they are given the opportunity to select the site they want to join.
